Next week I'm doing a RS activity all about gardening. I know a thing or two about gardening, but don't know what sort of questions I should address. They've pointed me towards container gardening and a little about lawn care.
Do you have any questions about gardening (flowers, vegetables, lawns, trees, shrubs--whatever) you would like answered?
If so, let's make a deal. You ask the questions. I'll provide answers, while getting an idea of what I should present.
veggies: the benefits of planting seeds, vs buying a starter plant (when to plant seeds and when to plant starters) How to choose the type of plant. i always get confused when there are a dozen different tomato plants to choose from. How do you know how much and how often to water? How to organize where to plant what? Do you need to fertilize, if so how do you do that?
flowers: I never know what types of flowers do well in Utah. All of the ones I plant seem to stay pretty close to the same size as when I buy them. Myabe I cam just buying the wrong kind. I always plant them hoping that by the end of the summer, they will be so big and pretty it will look like a big bush of flowers! Maybe I have too high of expectations. Benefits of annual and perennials. If you buy perennials, do you have to do anything special to them when they die to make sure they come up again?
Those are a few questions I could think of ....I swear each year I call my dad with the same questions! If I think of more I will post them. You should start a gardening blog. It is seeming to be the "cool" thing this year. I am sure there would be enough content to have tons of info.
oh and sometimes my tomatoes are rotten on the bottoms.... what causes that? I have heard too much or too little water, but I don't remember which, and if that is even really true.
So when is your event? Ours is April 13. I might be calling you to be one of our mini-class presenters! We had the same comments as what you posted you had been asked to gear it towards...also, schedule cool versus hot plant, and garden layout. I would love to hear what your ward does.
Can you just come and plant mine with me--like i've said before, sure wish we were neighbors-i'd love the info you share with the rs-i really am going to plant some things this year (i say it every year-but i really am-and i'm not pregnant-so i have no excuse!)

Why should I even bother with a garden when I can get a bounty box?
I taught a RS gardening class 2 years ago. Let me know if you want me to send you my handout and you can use what you want from it. :)

I need to know if you can take the growths from the bottom of a tree (shoots?) and cut them off to grow a new tree.
Also what is a nice full tree to put in my front side yard that won't make a mess or get too gargantuan?
Thank you.
